Two Paths for Bringing a Vehicle into Greece

One of the most important aspects of shipping a vehicle to Greece is understanding that there are two distinct legal frameworks under which a vehicle may enter and be used in the country. The appropriate path depends primarily on how long the owner intends to remain in Greece each year.

Temporary Use as a Visitor (Tourist Protocol)

Individuals who are not residing in Greece on a long-term basis may bring a vehicle into the country under a temporary use framework. Under this approach, the vehicle remains registered in the United States and continues to operate on its original license plates.

This option allows the vehicle to be used in Greece for a limited portion of the year—generally less than six months within a twelve-month period—without undergoing the full customs clearance process required for permanent importation. Because the vehicle is not being formally imported, it does not need to be converted to Greek registration or subjected to local taxation in the same way as a resident-owned vehicle.

However, this framework is strictly limited in duration and scope. Exceeding the allowable period or failing to comply with the conditions of temporary use can result in penalties or complications with authorities.

Permanent Import for Residents

Individuals who will be residing in Greece for more than six months out of the year fall under a different regulatory framework. In this case, the vehicle must be formally imported into Greece and undergo the full customs clearance process.

This includes:

• Applying for Greek registration plates

• Paying any applicable duties and taxes

• Ensuring compliance with European Union standards

• Completing all required administrative procedures for legal operation within Greece

This process is more involved and must be planned carefully in advance. The feasibility of importing a vehicle under this framework depends on multiple factors, including the vehicle’s specifications and the owner’s residency status.

Because both pathways involve specific legal and procedural requirements, it is essential to determine the appropriate approach before shipment.
