Clear Guidelines for a Smooth Shipment
Shipping internationally comes with rules—and understanding them ahead of time is the best way to avoid delays, additional costs, or complications.
At Hermes International Movers, we guide our clients through this process to ensure that every shipment moves smoothly from the United States to Greece.
Most Common Items Clients Ship
Our parcel service is designed primarily for personal and household goods.
These typically include:
- Clothing, shoes, and personal items
- Kitchenware, cookware, and small appliances
- Books, decorations, and household accessories
- Linens, towels, and everyday home essentials
If you are packing items from your home, in most cases they are acceptable—but there are important exceptions.
Items That Require Special Attention
Some items may be allowed but should be handled carefully or discussed with us in advance.
These include:
- Liquids
Open or improperly sealed liquids can leak and damage your entire shipment. We strongly recommend avoiding them altogether. - Fragile items (glass, ceramics, etc.)
These can be shipped, but must be properly packed to withstand international transport conditions. - Electronics
Should be packed securely and, when possible, accompanied by accessories grouped together to avoid loss.
If you are unsure about an item, it is always best to ask before shipping.
Items You Should Not Pack in Your Boxes
Certain items should never be included in your shipment for safety and practical reasons:
- Important personal documents (passports, IDs, legal paperwork)
- Cash, credit cards, or financial materials
- Checkbooks or sensitive personal records
These should always travel with you directly.
Prohibited Items (Not Allowed for Shipment)
The following items are not permitted for international parcel shipping:
- Prescription medications and medical devices
- Fire extinguishers and pressurized equipment
- Gasoline, diesel, or any type of fuel
- Lighters containing fuel
- Explosives, fireworks, gunpowder, or flares
- Toxic, hazardous, or radioactive materials
- Pesticides, herbicides, and chemical agents
- Biological materials, lab reagents, or medical specimens
- Damaged or unstable batteries
- Contraband or illegal substances
Additionally:
- Any item illegal in the United States or Greece is automatically prohibited
Restricted or Sensitive Categories
Some categories are subject to strict regulations and may not be accepted:
- Military, tactical, or law enforcement equipment
- Body armor or ballistic-rated gear
- Weapons-related accessories (including scopes or aiming devices)
- Government-issued uniforms or identification
- Animal products such as certain skins, furs, or protected materials
If your shipment includes anything that could fall into these categories, contact us before packing.
Important Note on Food, Liquids, and Aerosols
Certain everyday items can create issues during transport:
- Aerosol sprays (e.g., shaving foam, hair products)
These may expand due to temperature changes and can damage your shipment. - Liquids
Even sealed containers can leak under pressure or movement.
For this reason, we strongly recommend avoiding these items unless discussed in advance.
When in Doubt — Ask
International shipping rules can vary depending on the item, quantity, and current regulations.
If you are unsure about anything, it is always better to confirm ahead of time.
A quick check can prevent:
- Delays in customs
- Additional costs
- Shipment rejection or disposal
